The Pitmen eased past UniBond Division One South Side Rushall Olympic in the opening round of the Staffordshire Senior Cup to set up a home derby against Conference North Stafford Rangers in the next round.

Dean Edwards made six changes from the last match in an attempt to give some of the First Team squad much needed match practice. The plan to rest some of the team was soon upset as Chad Sheppard who had just returned to the side had to be replaced in the 5th minute by Ross Draper with a possible hamstring injury.

Earlier in the opening minutes Tyrone Barnett beat two defenders then found Adam Burley out on the left. The full back making his full debut for the Pitmen hit a cross back into the box for Barnett whose shot was blocked by Breeden. The ball rebounded back to Sam Hall who saw his shot on gaol deflected away for a corner kick.

In the 10th minute David Brown who had just returned back to Keys Park after
A loan spell at Glapwell took the ball of Barnett and turned the full back to race to the edge of the box. He hit a low hard shot which Breeden tipped away for a corner. Drapers corner found Barnett on the edge of the box and with a first time volley he forced a defender to head clear off the line.

Brown and Barnett were linking up well and another flowing move set Sean Platt up on the right from where he hit a cross into the six yard box where Breeden jumped to cut out the cross.

The opening goal came in the 27th minute after Draper had been fouled 22 yards from goal. In a move from the training ground three players lined up to take the free kick but after dummy runs by Sam Hall and Sean Platt it was left for Mark Briggs to step up and hit a shot into the top right side of the net.

Briggs was obviously buoyed by his first goal of the season as minutes later he robbed Grant Beckett in midfield to move forward and hit a firm low shot which went a fraction wide of the left hand post.

David Brown showed his skills again with a couple of step overs but he attempted a weak shot from 30 yards which Breeden easily saved when he had players breaking into the box. A pass to them would have been the better choice.

After Danny Harvey had pulled Craig Marshall down just outside the left hand side of the penalty area in the 38th minute Lee Barrow had a similar chance to Briggs earlier effort but the former Pitman lifted his free kick over Stuart Brock’s crossbar.

Just before half time Barnett had a header from a Briggs corner saved by Breeden then Sam Hall showed good feet to create an opening for a low shot which Breeden saw all the way as he made an easy save.

Ross Dyer came on for David Brown in the 55th minute

In the 60th minute Ross Draper made a quick break into the right hand side of the Rushall’s penalty area from where he played the ball into the six yard box for Tyrone Barnett to run into and tap home past the defenders on the line.

Rushall pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when Jarred Stevens scored through a crowded penalty area after a corner kick fell to him on the edge of the penalty area.

Danny Harvey halted a Rushall attack when he threw his body in the way of a shot from Jarred Stevens to divert the ball away for a corner. He then picked himself up to head the corner away.

Stevens showed a good piece of skill when he back heeled ball the ball into the path of Richard Beale who hit a good shot from 20 yards which Brock held onto.

The two goal lead was soon restored when Barnett scored his second goal of the game in the 70th minute when he was on hand to force home Sean Platts attempted shot which he had pulled wide.

Any chance of Rushall getting back into the game was ended three minutes later when another free kick lead to a goal. Ross Draper had been pushed over just outside the left hand side of the penalty area. Briggs free kick was deflected high into the air and went towards the back post where Ross Dyer headed the ball home for the Pitmens fourth goal.

Youth team player Jordan Nadat came on for Barnett after the goal and did well as did Ben Harbutt the Youth team Captain who had started the game. He did well to time a tackle inside the penalty area late in the game to halt the run of Rushall sub Jamie Silver.

As the game drew to a close the only worry was whether the mist/fog would come down quickly and cause the game to be called off but it stayed away just long enough for the final whistle to be blown

In the next round the supporters will certainly be out in force for the visit of local rivals Stafford Rangers on a date to be arranged however before that game the attention will turn back to the league when Worksop are Saturdays visitors to Keys Park.
