Hednesford Town FC v Coventry Sphinx FC (Youth)
The efforts of groundsman Scott Smith to get this game played on 22nd December 2008 were greatly appreciated as the continued disruption to fixtures because of the weather conditions has contributed to a serious fixture backlog.
The match saw a debut for highly rated midfielder from the BCFA Under 18 team, Joel Fuller and young centre-half Matt Morton made another start.
After an early cross put Jordan Money in some difficulty the young Pitmen broke away and Adam Meacham was put through on goal but saw a good opportunity saved by the Sphinx goalkeeper. The resulting corner was delivered well and was scrambled off the line by the visitors defence.
In the 5th minute a strong header by Joel Fuller put ADAM MEACHAM through on goal again and this time the striker made no mistake as he rounded the keeper to score.
In the 25th minute some poor defending of a corner saw the visitors back on level terms and within 2 minutes a mistake on the edge of the penalty area resulted in Jordan Money being left stranded as Coventry took the lead.
The shock of suddenly being a goal down spurred the home side into life and in the 29th minute a good move involving Jordan Nadat saw ADAM MEACHAM on hand to coolly slot the ball home.
Meacham was again in action a few minutes later when he elected to take a direct free kick but his well placed effort was saved by Allen in the Coventry Sphinx goal.
Just before half time an altercation between Richard Dunleavy and one of the Coventry players saw both players dismissed from the field. Some observations were that the referee's decision was harsh but at least both sides were treated equally.
The second half saw Hednesford start well with both Ryan Lester and Joel Fuller more prominent in midfield, however, there was no further breakthrough for the home side.
Somewhat against the run of play, Coventry took the lead in the 64th minute and although the young Pitmen had a couple of half chances to get back into the game the visitors went further ahead in the 78th minute after a goalkeeper error.
The introduction of Oliver Casey for a tiring Adam Meacham, who had worked hard all night for his two goals, made little difference to the side which by now was looking well beaten. However, on the stroke of full time, substitute DREW AITON hit an excellent shot which gave some respectability to the scoreline at 3-4.
There is no doubt that this was a game that Hednesford should have won but the disruption to the season is causing Paul Casey to rotate his squad more and the result is inconsistency, in both the style of the performance and the end results.
Team: Money, Dunleavy, Ward, Harbutt (Capt), Morton, Fuller, Nadat, Lester, Meacham, Imerfreys, Osborne. Subs: Law, Casey, Aiton, Bandurak, Murrain.
